What we believe

We are committed to the historic Christian faith and affirm the key principles of the Protestant Reformation. These key principles are summed up by the so-called “five solas”, which are Latin phrases that summarize our basic beliefs. The word “sola” means “alone” or “only”, and, together, the five “solas” sum up the only things needed to receive Christian salvation.

Sola gratia (by grace alone) means that we can only receive God’s salvation through His grace or “unmerited favour”. That is, as sinners, we do not deserve this wonderful gift from God. Instead, salvation is a free gift of God and we cannot earn favour from God to contribute to our salvation through good works or anything else.

Sola fide (by faith alone) means that God declares us guiltless by faith alone, and not through good works (although good works will be the natural actions of those with saving faith).

Sola Scriptura (by Scripture alone) means the Bible is the only inspired and authoritative source for Christian belief and practice. God has spoken authoritatively through the Bible, therefore we seek to understand it, teach it and live according to its standards.

Solo Christo (Christ alone) means that Jesus Christ is the only mediator between God and man and that we cannot be saved through anyone or anything else.

Soli Deo Gloria (Glory to God alone) means that all glory is due to God alone since salvation is accomplished solely through his will and action. Glory is due to God not only for the all-sufficient atonement of Jesus who died on the cross in our place, but also for God’s gracious gift of faith in Christ.
